West Nile virus is transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes

Infected people do not spread the virus further.
Most people infected with the virus do not get sick at all or only have a mild illness, but a few people develop a severe illness that affects the nervous system (mostly encephalitis or meningitis).
Older people (over 50) are at greater risk of severe illness, as are people with weakened immune systems and chronic underlying diseases.
