The ceremony marked the end of a major battery collection drive organized by the Agglomeration Agglomeration as part of the department’s waste prevention and management plan. Students from the colleges of Chaumié, Jasmin, Ducos-du-Hauron, Paul-Dangla and La Rocal (Bon-Encontre) collected 728.36 kg of used batteries in a few weeks.
“The students were very interested, but also because their parents asked their colleagues and families,” said the teachers of Ducos-du-Hauron, the biggest winner of the challenge with a weight of 249.74 kg.
The project was supported by Corepile, which provided recovery containers and an explanatory totem pole in the lobby of each facility during the challenge. Students also participated in mini-workshops revolving around recycling and selective sorting.
Batteries, phones later
“The aim was to raise awareness among young people about reducing waste and, when it comes to batteries, to use rechargeables rather than disposable ones,” said Florient Sanchez, Agen Agglomeration Prevention Assistant. To congratulate them on their commitment, each college will gather at the Cave Garden Center and receive a voucher for three trees (€150) to plant at their institution.
In addition, on the occasion of the Tour de France, Ecosystem joins forces with stopover cities such as Villeneuve-sur-Lot and Agen to recover old phones forgotten in drawers. “Extremely damaged phones will be recycled; for others they will be redone. The profits will go to an association, the Local Agenais Mission,” explained Leïla Djebara, head of waste reduction at Agglo.
